The power of dressmaking with Candice Whitley

We love celebrating the creations of our local community. One way we do this is through our blog, where we invite talented makers we’ve discovered on social media to share their stories and creative journeys. This month, we’re thrilled to feature a very special guest. Candice has graciously shared her insights into the transformative power of making and creating garments, and we’re so grateful for her generosity and inspiration.

Introducing maker Candice Whitley of @projectsbycandy

“Sewing has been the greatest thing for my mental health. It honestly keeps me sane while also occasionally driving me insane. I’ve always led a very active lifestyle but in 2021 I was injured at work. This injury left me unable to stand for longer than 5 minutes without being in excruciating pain. After 6 months of rehabilitation I was told that I needed to re-evaluate my life as my condition is stable and this is as good as it will get.

I was then diagnosed with depression which is understandable considering my whole life had to change. I was asked to leave my job as I wasn’t able to perform the physical tasks and at age 23 I was very lost. After sitting in bed and watching all the tv I could handle I decided to go to the craft store and find things that could keep me mentally occupied without being physically demanding. That’s when I bought my first sewing machine. Admittedly I think I only bought it because it was $50 and pink. I didn’t want to spend too much in case I either didn’t like sewing or couldn’t do it and the colour was a real selling point at the time.

When I first started sewing in 2022 there was a lot of things I avoided. For the first year I only bought patterns that had no zips or button holes and that someone had done a YouTube tutorial on because I didn’t know how to read a pattern. The first thing I made was a matching outfit for my partner and I. I bought a bed sheet from the op shop and only picked it because it already had button holes sewn in for the shirt. I can say yellow wasn’t our colour but I loved being able to do something for the both us. This matching outfit was the first time in almost 2 years I felt the sense of self accomplishment. I had finally achieved something that wasn’t sitting at home in pain.

I slowly started to pick up pattern reading from explanations on YouTube. I did my first button hole and zip in 2023 and from there everything didn’t seem so unachievable. My mental health improved drastically as I was finally doing something that gave me purpose and worth. I made things for my friends and family and I also started doing pattern testing to try and put myself out there. I think my favourite thing about sewing is being able to sew for my partner and dogs. I love being “that family” and we started a tradition that every year for Christmas I would make us all a matching family outfit.

My goal over the next year is to slowly grow my wardrobe to 80% being handmade clothes. I think it is so amazing to have the ability to make unique clothes that also fit me perfectly that I don’t have a desire to buy clothes like I use to. I definitely spend more time buying fabric than I do clothes shopping which I think in turn has become more expensive but that’s okay. I’m sure like many others I’ve invested too much money and time into sewing for it to not be a forever hobby and I’m so excited to keep making beautiful things.”

Simplicity 9510

Simplicity Sewing Pattern S9510 Dog Beds, Leash with Case, Harness Vest and Coat

This pattern is great for L/XL dog owners. I found it hard to find patterns for my XL dog but Version D jacket goes up to a 5X which is the perfect size for my big fur ball. The dog beds are great as well and so easy to make. They also make great floor cushions to sit on. I have made the jacket in Cotton and poplin as they have been for summer wear but flannelette would also be great if you were making a winter jacket. For the beds, I made them in a fleece and flannelette but would also consider using a furnishing fabric for a summer/outside bed.

Burda 6134

Burda Style Pattern 6134 Misses' Jumpsuit

This pattern was the first jumpsuit I ever made. They are great to wear out but also perfect for lazing around the house as they are so comfortable. They are a good starter for a beginner to make as they don’t require zips or button holes however do be warned the instructions aren’t as informative as other beginner patterns. I’ve made this garment previously in cotton, poplin and rayon but would also think version A in a crepe and version B in a linen would also be great.

Simplicity 9678

Simplicity Sewing Pattern S9678 Misses' Dress with Sleeve and Length Variations

This is my go to dress for an event as it is an easy and quick but elegant make. No zips or button holes are needed so I would recommend an adventurous beginner could definitely tackle this one. I love that depending on your fabric choice it can be great for all events whether it be a casual outing or a wedding. I have made this dress previously in rayon, cotton and poplin. I can also see myself making this dress in a silky type fabric for a special occasion.

Simplicity 9134

Simplicity Sewing Pattern S9134 Misses' Released Pleat Dress

I would describe this dress as cinched waist but still have the twirl factor. It is perfect for all occasions from picnic to party. It has an invisible zip and bias binding finishes for the neck and arm holes. The body is made up of 6 pieces which you can have a lot of fun with. You can either use 1 fabric or several fabrics to mix and match and make a very eye catching dress. I combined 1/8 and ½ gingham which I absolutely love. I have also made this dress in a poplin and linen. I think a rainbow dress with each panel being a different colour/pattern would look amazing.

Simplicity 8180

Simplicity Sewing Pattern 8180 Boys' and Men's Shirt, Boxer Shorts and Tie

What a fantastic starter into men’s wear. The instructions are easy and it’s a quick make. I think it is great that it also comes in kid sizes as well if you wanted to make matching outfits. I have made the men’s shirt over 15 times using cotton, poplin, drill and broadcloth. I did make one in rayon but I think using a fabric with a bit more structure is ideal.

McCall’s 8459

McCall's Sewing Pattern M8459 Men's Shirt

When I first saw this pattern I thought retro bowling shirts and I’m all for it. This shirt has great finishing techniques I have not seen in other patterns and would suit an intermediate sewist who already has the shirt making basics down. I love how you can mix and match different fabrics to make a completely unique shirt that will really stand out at events. I have made this shirt in drill, cotton and broadcloth.

Vogue 9344

Vogue Patterns V9344 Misses' Dress

The sleeves. Do I need to say more? This pattern is just so elegant and simple but also statement pieces. Version A sleeves give off flowy vibes whereas version B sleeves need structure. I think version A would be great in a silky type or rayon and version B would be great in a cotton/poplin.

Simplicity 9929

Simplicity Sewing Pattern S9929 Misses' and Women's Lounge Set by Mimi G Style

This pattern makes me want to learn how to sew with stretch material. I have attempted in the past but have never been able to accomplish it however this could change. I adore the pockets on the pants and the sleeve binding and I can’t wait to attempt it. I love the feeling of bamboo knit and so I think this will be my first attempt. I would also like to attempt it in a rib knit or velvet as well. This will definitely be my new year new sewing adventure.

Simplicity 9758

Simplicity Sewing Pattern S9758 Men's Shirts and Shorts by Norris Danta Ford

Mitchell picked out this pattern because he can’t stand wearing pants with no pockets. He also wants matching pants to the shirts I make and what a better pattern than one that includes all his requirements. I plan on using this pattern to make party/festival outfits for Mitchell. We discussed fabric and decided some fun cotton or linen fabric would be best suited as events can get quite hot here in Queensland.

Butterick 6872

Butterick Sewing Pattern B6872 Misses' Dress

I love the style of a loose flowing dress while still having a fitted bodice and this pattern checks those boxes. I think it will be a great wardrobe basic as you can mix and match the sleeves and skirt lengths to create more than just the 3 options given. Each variation looks like a completely different dress and depending on your choices you can make a dress to suit each season. I can see this pattern fitting into  my everyday wear perfectly. I think it would look great in a colourful cotton or gingham.
